Dear Réaders,
Welcome to “Accent Aigu.” My name is Mirren Gordon-Crozier, and I am a Costume Designer who loves both the history of fashion and fashion itself. Here, you will find a wellspring of inspiration (and some historical notes if you care to read them). From time to time , I will release a Substack related to film and fashion, finding inspiration outside the norm and try to bring a tad bit of romance to dressing.
For my first letter, I will be on the nose with my choices for Spring. I know we all want to get our heads out of our turtle necks so here are some ideas for spring shopping. I hope this letter brings a little excitement to your day.
…..
Best,
Mirren Gordon-Crozier

Florals…. On film
In the Mood for love.
“In the Mood for Love,” set in 1960s Hong Kong. Its love story between Chow and Su is portrayed in a unique and subtle way, almost entirely through their clothing. As the plot unfolds, we see how the characters’ emotional connection is conveyed through their fashion choices. For example, when Chow discovers that his partner is having an affair, he notices that his tie matches Su’s husband’s tie, hinting at their connection. Later on, as Chow begins to develop feelings for Su, his ties start to match the colors in her dresses, symbolizing their growing bond. The use of costumes as a storytelling device adds depth and nuance to the film’s portrayal of love and relationships.
The qipao, also known as the cheongsam, is a traditional Chinese dress that is characterized by its slim cut. The dress features a diagonal joint down the front of the right chest and a hemline that reaches just below the knee. The dress has two side slits and comes in two variations - either sleeveless or with small capped sleeves. The most striking feature of the qipao is its high, stiff collar, which sometimes almost reaches the chin.
The qipao has its roots in the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), but it became popular among Shanghai’s upper classes in the 1920s and in Hong Kong during the 1960s. This period is known as the golden age of qipaos, and it was triggered by a large wave of Shanghainese immigrants moving to Hong Kong. The color of the qipao has significant meaning in Chinese culture. Red, for instance, is associated with good luck and happiness, while black is worn during mourning periods. The fabric pattern on the dress often includes floral designs, with peonies being a popular choice as they symbolize prosperity and wealth. The Chinese knot buttons on the qipao are also symbolic. These buttons are often made from silk cords and are intricately tied in decorative knots. They are believed to represent unity, good fortune, and longevity.
