"The Talented Mr. Ripley" is complex and multi-faceted. Tom Ripley has a grandiose sense of self-worth, which is evident throughout. He feels he is owed a better life and is shameless about doing what he can to attain it.  Audiences love a psychopath story but what do all of these versions of Ripley have in common? Great Fashion….

For me, nothing tops Anne Roth and Gary Jones’ interpretation of the costumes from “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” directed by Anthony Minghella. The pastel palette against the Tyrrhenian Sea brings tears to my eyes. The biggest question is how can we not only dress like Marge but also Dickie? 

Ripley on (Netflix) could be consumed frame by frame for its rich black and white, beautifully framed elegance by Robert Elswit’s cinema photography. Reminiscent of Alfred Stieglitz’s New York we are introduced to Ripley living on the Bowery. Dressed in an old tank his low-life con artistry is soon elevated by the lucky intervention of a rich man in search of his wayward son. RIPLEY’s hunger for the rich life, for the objects of success drives him along the Amalfi coast to his friend Dickie’s palazzo overlooking the sea. There he lays eyes on soft leather Ferragamo’s and white linen suits. He desires Dickie and everything that is his.
