Stripes have spanned different cultures and time periods, The history of striped clothing is rich and varied.  In ancient Egypt, striped patterns were used in textiles and clothing, often associated with ceremonial garments. In the Roman Empire, striped clothing was worn in various forms, including tunics and togas, often to denote social status or occupation. In medieval times, stripes became more common in the clothing of peasants and lower classes as well as prostitutes, outcasts. Stripes  also signified certain roles, such as the clothing of jesters or criminals, who were sometimes dressed in striped attire as a form of humiliation

The 19th century saw the rise of nautical stripes, particularly associated with sailors and the maritime industry. The famous Breton stripe, characterized by its navy and white pattern, became popularized by French sailors. Striped patterns were commonly worn by laborers and factory workers, as they were practical and durable. Then Coco Chanel famously popularized the Breton top as a chic piece in women's fashion. In the 1960s and 70s, stripes were embraced by counter-culture movements, often associated with the bohemian lifestyle and youth rebellion.
