Partners in Crime and Ensemble Dressing
This week's subject "Film meets Fashion" is an exploration of rebellion, escapism, and young love. "Bonnie and Clyde", "Breathless", and "Badlands" are the first movies that take a look at fashionable couples on screen.
“Bonnie and Clyde” is a crime movie released in 1967, which tells the story of two lovers who embark on a crime spree across the United States during the Great Depression. The movie is known for portraying the two main characters as romantic antiheroes. Theadora Van Runkle, the costume designer for the film, created a timeless look that included a wardrobe of tweed, berets, waistcoats, and Mary Janes. This was Theadora’s debut as a costume designer, and she later went on to design costumes for movies such as The Godfather Part II and The Thomas Crown Affair.
“Breathless” is a French movie from 1960, directed by Jean-Luc Godard. The film tells the story of Michel, a small-time criminal who falls in love with a woman named Patricia. The fashion in “Breathless” is a reflection of the couple’s beatnik sensibilities. Since the movie didn’t have a formal costume designer, the actors had a say in their clothing choices. Patricia, played by Jean Seberg, mostly wore a striped sailor shirt paired with a pixie haircut, which became an iconic look of the French New Wave. The outfits of the characters were effortlessly chic and understated, reflecting the simplicity and rebellion of their personalities.
"Badlands" is a 1973 American crime movie directed by Terrence Malick. It is a unique portrayal of violence and love. The movie tells the story of a young couple, Kit and Holly, who go on a killing spree across the Midwest after Kit murders Holly's father. As they evade the law and travel through the stunning landscapes of the American West, their relationship becomes increasingly strained. In "Badlands", the protagonist couple, Kit and Holly, had a distinct fashion sense that was both simple and iconic. The Costume Design was by Rosanna Norton.
