"American Gigolo," released in 1980, is a neo-noir film directed by Paul Schrader and stars Richard Gere as Julian Kaye, a sophisticated male escort living in Los Angeles. Julian Kaye caters to wealthy women, providing companionship and intimacy. He enjoys a lavish lifestyle, driven by his charm and good looks, allowing him to navigate L.A's elite social circles. His life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes embroiled in a murder investigation.
Reportedly John Travolta turned the film down because he wanted final cut approval. Travolta allegedly kept the Armani suits especially tailor-made for him in the film. Armani's work on the film helped make him an international name and launched a menswear tailoring revolution. Armani's suits for the film were a departure from traditional men's suits at the time. They were made from linen fabrics, came in softer colors, and had more casual silhouettes. Armani's signature muted color palette included grey, beige anthracite, and taupe.
