The Lisbon sisters’ wardrobe cerated by Nancy Steiner in The Virgin Suicides is built on a visual between uniformity and individuality. Each girl wears a version of the same 1970s silhouettes..prairie dresses, slips, modest cotton pieces subtly altered within the limits set by their mother. The repetition binds them together visually, making them feel like a single unit rather than fully distinct individuals.

There’s a lived-in patina to everything. The clothes feel handed down, softened by time, carrying the imprint of each sister before the next.

Their wardrobe suggests protected innocence but also control: high necklines, delicate fabrics, slightly old-fashioned shapes. As the girls become confined to the house, this tightens. Daywear dissolves into loungewear, nightgowns, pajamas, washed-out dresses, blurring private and public life and reinforcing their isolation.

The prom dresses, are made from fabrics that feel almost fragile, gauzy, nostalgic, and dreamlike…like a fleeting vision of freedom that was never fully real.

Possibly my favorite film of all time and definitely a movie where the costumes help immensely with the visual story.

The relationship between Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy was one of the most celebrated collaborations between actress and designer in fashion and film. They met in 1953 during the production of the movie Sabrina, when Hepburn insisted on wearing Givenchy’s designs, helping introduce the young couturier to an international audience. Givenchy created many of Hepburn’s most iconic looks, including the little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, shaping her image. Their partnership went beyond costume design; it was a lifelong friendship built on mutual admiration, with Givenchy considering Hepburn his muse and Hepburn relying on him not only for film wardrobes but also for her personal clothing, making their collaboration one of the most enduring and influential alliances in fashion history.

Wuthering Heights is a love story that has lasted the test of time, its moral ambiguity invites endless reinterpretation. Each generation reshapes it to reflect its own fears and desires so it never stops feeling relevant. Wuthering Heights has been adapted for the screen dozens of times since the early 20th century. There are around 12–14 feature film adaptations, starting with a 1920 silent film, making it one of the most frequently adapted novels in English literature.

The story is all about class tension. The stark contrasts (moorland severity vs. domestic refinement, Heathcliff’s outsider roughness vs. Catherine’s social polish) translate naturally into texture, color, and shape. Its gothic romanticism, emotional excess, and sense of timeless rebellion make it a recurring reference point for designers exploring darkness and longing.

In the 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights ( coming out this friday,) costume designer Jacqueline Durran approaches the story as a stylized, emotionally driven fantasy rather than a strict period drama. Working with director Emerald Fennell, she blends references from multiple eras, Elizabethan, Victorian, 1950s, and even modern fashion to create a heightened, almost fever-dream aesthetic. The costumes prioritize mood and psychology over historical accuracy.

Lauren Bacall Part 2.

Across her career with Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall showed remarkable range. In The Big Sleep, she defined their famous chemistry as the sharp, flirtatious Vivian opposite Bogart’s Philip Marlowe. In Key Largo, their final film together, she shifted to a quieter, more mature role as Nora Temple. Decades later, in Murder on the Orient Express, she reinvented herself again by playing the fussy, comic Mrs. Hubbard, proving her ability to evolve from classic glamour to character-driven ensemble work.

In her later years, Lauren Bacall remained active in film and theater. She earned major acclaim for her Broadway work, winning two Tony Awards, and continued appearing in notable films into her seventies and eighties. Based mainly in New York, she became known for her sharp wit, independence, and cultural authority as one of the last great stars of classic Hollywood. Bacall also published bestselling memoirs and was honored with numerous lifetime achievement awards. She died in 2014 at age 89.

Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske, 1924–2014) the great American beauty was an actress and model who became one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars of the 1940s and beyond.

Born in New York City, she began her career as a fashion model before being discovered by director Howard Hawks. At just 19, she made her film debut in To Have and Have Not (1944) opposite Humphrey Bogart. Her deep voice, confident gaze, and natural intelligence immediately set her apart.

She went on to star in classic films such as The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and Key Largo, becoming a defining figure of film noir. Bacall married Bogart in 1945, and their partnership became one of Hollywood’s most famous love stories, they were married for 12 years. Despite the age gap, their marriage was considered one of Hollywood’s happiest.

After Bogart’s death in 1957, Bacall successfully reinvented herself on Broadway and in later films. She won two Tony Awards and received an Honorary Academy Award in 2009 for her lifetime achievements. Her career ran from the 1940s to the 2000s.

In part one for today we will go over three films :

To Have and Have Not follows Harry Morgan ( Humphrey Bogart) , an American boat captain living in wartime Martinique, who tries to stay neutral and avoid political trouble. He meets the confident singer Marie “Slim” Browning, and the two quickly fall for each other. He agrees to smuggle Resistance fighters to safety, risking his life in the process. By the end, love and conscience lead him to take a stand and commit both to Slim and to the fight against oppression.

How to Marry a Millionaire ( this is my personal favorite of all time ) is about three glamorous women who move to New York to find rich husbands. After dating wealthy men and facing mix-ups and misunderstandings, they learn that love and happiness matter more than money and choose romance over riches.

Written on the Wind (1956) follows Mitch ( Rock Hudson ), a loyal friend to a wealthy but troubled oil family. He secretly loves Lucy ( Lauren Bacall ), who marries his insecure best friend Kyle ( Robert Stack ).

A Great Vanity Fair Article on Lauren Bacall from 2011

For todays post, I am doing something a little different than usual. A show I recently did the Costumes for just landed on Netflix last week, and people have been paying attention to the clothes…. which felt like permission to talk about the work while it’s still alive!

In the fall of 2024 I moved to Atlanta for six months to start my work as the Costume Designer for His and Hers Netflix. Will Oldroyd ( Director and Writer ) and Dee Johnson ( Showrunner ) had pulled together a great team of creatives Ante Chang as Pilot DP and Kelly McGehee as Production Designer who had a strong vision of how the show should look and feel. It takes a huge costume team to make this possible and I am forever grateful to my crew.

His & Hers is a psychological crime thriller starring Tessa Thompson as Anna, a former news anchor who returns to her small Georgia hometown after a murder resurfaces dark memories from her past. As her estranged husband Jack, a local detective played by Jon Bernthal, leads the investigation, old secrets, rivalries, and buried trauma among Anna’s former friends begin to unravel.

In designing the show, I began by researching female news anchors and newsroom culture. I was immediately drawn to the bold, saturated hues traditionally used on-air rarely prints, almost always monochromatic looks with a strong visual. This became the foundation of Anna’s wardrobe. Because the story unfolds over just a few days, I assigned a dominant color to each script day, allowing color to function as both narrative and emotional structure.

The most important part of the process was my first fitting with Tessa Thompson, who both stars in and produces the series. She is a dream collaborator and a formidable fashion lover in her own right. We spent extensive time discussing who Anna is, her emotional arc, what might be revealed or withheld at different moments in the unfolding drama. We looked at how elements of her backstory (some of which emerge gradually over the course of the show) could be embedded subtly in her clothes.

For color palette I was inspired by Tom Ford’s work at Gucci in the 1990’s, particularly his use of jade hues, clean lines, and powerful silhouettes for women. Anna begins the series in blue tones - midnight, teal, cobalt, which I felt reflected her sadness. As the story progresses, her palette expands across the spectrum, moving through most colors of the rainbow and ultimately landing in orange: a warm, sunlit hue used deliberately for its emotional and narrative resonance.

I used ‘color blocking’ for her on air looks. Color blocking or monochromatic dressing is essentially wearing a single color or varying shades, tints, and textures of one color from head to toe, it became a key styling device for Anna. This approach creates a streamlined, intentional silhouette while allowing subtle contrasts in fabric and finish (matte versus shine, wool versus silk) to add depth and complexity. It is a technique often used to signal confidence, cohesion, or psychological clarity, and in Anna’s case, it mirrors her evolving internal state as truth and memory come into focus.

These jewel hues complimented the rich look of the cinematography and locations. Tessa Thompson is every designer’s dream. She wore the clothing beautifully and at the same time made it all seem so real as she makes her way through the complex twists and turns of the story.

From Inspiration to Camera Test (Photo of Tessa Thompson during our camera test) This camera test captures a key moment in our design process. The PVC trench shown here ultimately didn’t make it into the final series, but it illustrates how rigorously wardrobe decisions were tested and refined. Each piece is evaluated not only for silhouette and character, but for how it behaves on camera how it catches light, moves with the body, and communicates psychology.

Adding levels of blood to the costume helps tell a story of where the wounds were exposed. We had many dresses with different levels of blood from light to dark and the body ( Rachel) has been lying in the rain for hours.

The relationship between Costume Designer Edith Head and director Alfred Hitchcock occurred across multiple films produced between the early 1940s and the early 1960s, Head’s costume designs functioned in alignment with Hitchcock’s precise directorial methodology, reinforcing his emphasis on visual clarity, narrative, and psychological suspense. Edith Head and Alfred Hitchcock’s collaboration emerged from the industrial structures of Hollywood rather than from a personal or artistic partnership formed outside the studio system. Head had been employed by Paramount Pictures since 1924 and by the late 1930s had become its chief costume designer. Hitchcock, after establishing his reputation in British cinema, transitioned to Hollywood in 1939, and subsequently working extensively within the Paramount system.

Their first major collaboration occurred on Suspicion (1941.) The success of the Head–Hitchcock collaboration can be attributed to their shared commitment to visual restraint and narrative functionality. Hitchcock’s filmmaking practice was grounded in extensive storyboarding, controlled camera movement, and a belief that cinematic meaning should be communicated visually rather than verbally. Head’s approach to Costume Design mirrored these priorities. She consistently argued that costumes should serve character and narrative, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation that might distract from the story.

Across their films together, costume functions as an extension of character psychology rather than as a marker of historical or fashionable accuracy. This approach is particularly evident in Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), Birds ( 1963) and To Catch a Thief (1955).

Legendary costume designer Edith Head (1897-1981) is still the most awarded woman in Oscars history, with eight Academy Awards for Best Costume Design.

She once quoted “ What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the screen he's become a different person.”

Green functions as a color of psychological instability and moral ambiguity, distinct from the more overt danger coded by red in Hitchcock’s films. In The Birds (1963), Tippi Hedren’s pale green skirt suit designed by Head to appear “cool, chic, and invulnerable”. Get the look……

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), directed by Howard Hawks, is a landmark in Technicolor glamour and helped cement Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell as Hollywood icons. Hawks’ comedic timing and sharp framing centered their charisma, but the film’s enduring legacy comes from its costume design by William Travilla, who created some of the most famous looks in film history, including Monroe’s hot-pink satin gown worn in “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Travilla used bold color blocking, sleek silhouettes, and exaggerated embellishments to highlight the contrast between Monroe’s naive charm and Russell’s worldly wit. One of William Travilla’s original costumes Monroe’s gold lamé showgirl dress was once considered so scandalous that the studio tried to destroy it, but Travilla hid it in his closet for decades to save it. Travilla won an Academy Award for Adventures of Don Juan (1948) and became Monroe’s go-to designer, creating her most iconic looks including the famous white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch. Travilla had a gift for combining sensuality with elegance, and his costumes helped shape the public image of Hollywood’s most famous blonde.

The Great Gatsby Fashion in Film.

The Costumes in the two Great Gatsby films reflect entirely different interpretations of the same Jazz Age world. Together, the two films reveal how costume design can reshape the same story

Jack Clayton’s The Great Gatsby (1974), starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow had costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge focus on historical authenticity. Daisy Buchanan, played by Mia Farrow, wears pale chiffons, lace, and bias-cut silks in shades of ivory and peach, echoing the languid elegance of 1920s high society. Gatsby’s wardrobe, designed with Ralph Lauren, features cream linen suits, pastel shirts, and three-piece tailoring that mirrors his polished, self-made refinement. The overall palette feels sun-faded and nostalgic… more melancholic than dazzling evoking a world already slipping into memory.

In contrast, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (2013) with costumes by Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada, transforms Fitzgerald’s world into a heightened fantasy of modern glamour. Prada reworked around forty archive gowns for the women, shimmering with sequins, crystal beading, and metallic fringe. Carey Mulligan’s Daisy glows in champagne silks and diamonds from Tiffany & Co., her fragility framed by opulence. The men’s costumes, by Brooks Brothers, are sharper and more saturated, pink suits, mint shirts, bold ties reflecting Baz Luhrmann’s cinematic excess and Gatsby’s obsession with reinvention.
